In the fashion world you can play so many different roles and positions. You don’t have to be a fashion designer, but you can still make a very successful career in the fashion industry.
It’s always nice to be able to live with what you love. Below are a few key roles in the fashion world in which you can participate – from design, production, marketing and so on.
Design
This is one of the most prominent professions in the fashion industry. Designers are responsible for conceptualizing their ideas about trends and embodying them in their finished products. Designers can be hired by companies that own a group of designers, or work for their own brand and production line, or even as freelancers for multiple companies.
There are different types of fashion designers:

They are responsible for the purchase of raw materials for production, the choice of fabrics, textiles and finishes. They have to make decisions based on price, quality and the latest trends and innovations in raw materials.
- Technical Designers: Technical designers are responsible for making fittings throughout the process, from sampling to manufacturing. Perhaps it is not they who have developed the garment, but they are experts in providing alternatives to clothing to improve its fit.
- Manufacturers of patterns: patterning is the basis of sewing clothing. The creators of the patterns create and maintain patterns for clothing, which were drawn by designers. The creators of patterns are key figures in the creation of clothing.
- Pattern sorters: Determining the size of clothing begins with sorting patterns. Model sorters are experts in creating specifications for different sizes. They are vital people for any fashion brand, because a uniform choice of sizes of all products can maintain customer loyalty and trust.
- Fit by figure. Ultimately, clothing and footwear are designed to provide comfort and style. Landing is an integral part of the fashion industry, and the most accurate landing involves using the model as a regulated body.
Many companies have their own special models, corresponding to their models, which have the exact size required by the brand. Sometimes you’ve seen ads looking for model designs, from children, men and women to larger models.
- Quality control specialists: Quality control is of paramount importance to all products and is no exception in the fashion industry. Quality control experts check the quality of raw materials, such as coats, shrinkage and fading textiles, as well as the overall quality of a fashionable item, such as the general landing of an accessory.
- Planners: Fashion planners work closely with designers, sellers, and buyers to determine the production plan for the coming seasons. They look at both the production and marketing side, focusing on the latest fashion trends.
Marketing
Marketing is as important as creating the perfect clothes. Whether in wholesale or retail marketing, fashion marketers strive to promote fashion products in this fast-changing world.
- Fashion shoppers/retailers: Sellers of goods are those who buy ready-made goods for sale in stores, such as department stores. These sellers investigate and analyze market trends, relative customer needs and inventories. They have a huge responsibility in terms of profit, because being able to buy the right product for sale can have a significant impact on revenue.
- Sales specialists in showrooms: some brands have their showrooms and present their collections to fashion buyers (wholesalers) to place their orders. Compared to retail, showroom sales professionals need to better know their seasonal returning customers and be able to provide detailed sales information.
- Retail Store Manager / Store Owners: Retail Store Manager, Sales and Store Owners are direct staff who deal with retail customers like you and me.
Other professions related to fashion
With the exception of design, production or fashion marketing, someone may be attracted to other posts such as fashion magazine editor, online blogs and fashion management, etc.
- Fashion writers: writers or freelance writers can write for magazines, online blogs or website reviews, trends and recommendations. Fashion writers can also become fashion magazine editors.
